You can learn nearly anything on the internet if you know how to learn.
And yet, if you look, people don’t learn much, don’t do much, and the momentary excitement, the big promises die almost as fast as they were born, leaving the promiser frustrated, and puzzled why they can’t keep their word, and actually do what they said they would do.
As I was researching for you places you could learn how to learn, I found a TED video that is exactly what the doctor ordered for a few of my clients, so I am going to post it here.
And I am going to make it a tad easier to consume and maybe learn, by sharing what I do when I want to learn something.
It takes work. Preparation, and if you are in the habit of just listening to audios, now you know why you are not learning… in spite all the time you put in. You are not doing activity that is causing the information to become yours.
Three invisible dynamics I am learning from a TED talk
I just listened to a TED talk that shows three invisible dynamics why you don’t do what you said you would do.
It was a 17 minute talk, and I promptly forgot two of those three… but I want to know them, so what am I going to do?
If I listen one more time, the likelihood that I’ll remember more is about 5%… slim.
Instead, I am going to take a different approach: I am going to LEARN the three different ways.
How? I am going to take notes, and maybe I am even going to create a mindmap… a drawing.
So let’s see how long it will take me.
An hour… I even chopped up the audio part of the video to the five parts. In between I made myself lunch…
Intro: 3 reasons you aren’t doing what you say you will do. download
reason 1: we have a fixed mindset that tells us we can’t do it… we don’t have the ability or the talent. Remedy: grit download
reason 2: people like me don’t do things like that… identity put together, not the truth download
reason 3: Secretly you don’t want to do it… you do everything from some should, no intrinsic motivation. Remedy: develop some intrinsic motivations. download
